Hello! My name is Heather and I’m a native English speaker from Canada (can you tell from the photo?!?). I have been teaching ESL in various settings and levels for the past 10 years. Here’s a bit more information about me: TEACHING EXPERIENCE My last 3 years of teaching have been focused on students who are either studying at an English speaking university or who are hoping to apply to a Canadian university. I’ve done plenty of work with TOEFL and I’ve also been a TESL/TEFL teacher for 3 years. Having learned several second languages myself, I understand the challenges and joys of learning languages and exploring cultures. EDUCATION Starting off with a TESL degree, my love of teaching ESL led me to further study in this area. I received a Diploma in Applied Linguistics from the University of Victoria followed by a Masters in Linguistics also from the University of Victoria. I also have a counseling background. TEACHING METHODS Having taught for over 10 years, I’ve learned that no single teaching methodology is enough. My approach is communicative (i.e., learning through expressing oneself rather than by answering worksheets). I believe that English needs to be ‘real’ whether you are living in an English speaking environment or not. That said, there is also a place for grammar exercises and pronunciation drills. These are important tools in improving communicative abilities. I like to correct mistakes when I see/hear them and I try to balance this with allowing students to communicate their ideas without too much interruption and distraction. PERSONALITY As a person and teacher I am gentle and take a strong interest in others. I am a people-person who loves to get to know others and learn about their hopes, dreams and struggles. I embrace diversity and am open to new thoughts and ideas. And I LOVE helping others to learn! I am available for conversational English lessons and document editing. I look forward to meeting you!
